Lyft Insurance Overview

At Lyft, safety is our top priority and we’re always working to further enhance safety measures for the community. Since our launch nearly two years ago, we have worked to increase transportation safety by establishing unprecedented background check and driving record standards, creating accountability and trust through in-app feedback and pioneering first-of-its-kind insurance protection to cover both drivers and passengers.

Lyft was the first company to cover drivers and passengers through our $1M excess commercial liability policy in 2012. Since then, Lyft has introduced additional coverages, including:

  • Uninsured motorist (UM): Added to $1M Excess Liability policy - covering drivers and passengers if they are hit by an uninsured motorist that is at fault

  • Underinsured motorist (UIM): Added to $1M Excess Liability policy - covering drivers and passengers if they are hit by an underinsured motorist that is at fault

  • Collision: Contingent automobile physical damage policy - $2,500 deductible and up to $50,000 maximum applicable to drivers who have purchased collision coverage on their personal policy

  • Match mode coverage: Contingent commercial liability policy - up to $50,000 for individual injury, $100,000 for total injury and $25,000 for property damage

To provide more clarity around coverage for drivers and passengers on the Lyft platform, we have created a graphic that clearly displays how and when the community is covered. We will continue to work with transportation companies, regulators, insurance providers, and other stakeholders in the Peer-to-Peer Transportation Insurance Coalition to address how the insurance industry can continue evolving to support the growing peer-to-peer economy.
