The Austin community’s overwhelming calls for more transportation options have been heard. After a petition started by ATX Safer Streets garnered nearly 4,000 organic signatures from Austin residents – many of whom left comments explaining their need for Lyft and other ridesharing services – Lyft will now be providing friendly, reliable, and affordable rides throughout the Heart of Texas beginning tonight at 7 p.m.
Not only is Austin an open, dynamic city that lives and breathes Lyft’s community-first culture, but it’s also a city that needs options like Lyft to ease traffic congestion and make streets safer after-hours. Lyft makes it easy to request a safe ride from your smartphone, so Austinites can now choose to leave their cars at home during the workday or for a night downtown.
Lyft’s founding group of drivers in Austin includes a local food truck owner, middle school social worker, nanny, and bar owner – all recognizable by the furry pink mustaches attached to their grilles. Every driver has undergone a strict background check and vehicle inspection and is equipped with a first-of-its kind insurance protection plan that provides more than three times the coverage that is required of Austin taxis. These safety improvements are outlined in the comparison chart below.
All new Austin passengers receive two weeks of free rides to help them discover more ways to get around town with Lyft – and Lyft will make a donation matching rides taken over launch weekend to Austin Sunshine Camps, a local nonprofit that provides free tutoring and overnight week-long camp experiences to children of low-income families.
Austin, we can’t wait to show you a new way to safely travel your town. Here’s to Lyft off!
