Meet Melissa Alam, a Philadelphia-based brand strategist, photographer, founder and editor of Femme & Fortune, an online lifestyle magazine for ambitious women. A self-proclaimed #ideaholic, Melissa is best known for creating the first all-female coworking space in Philadelphia called The Hive as well as her yearly conference for women called The Fearless Conference. When she's not busy growing her businesses, Melissa can be found traveling the world and creating events to bring together the community around her. We got the scoop on her favorite spots in the city to grab a cup of coffee and get inspired.
"As a creative always on the go, I tend to look for places to work that not only have strong coffee and wifi, but also a certain “hustle and grind” ambiance that I can feed off of. Philadelphia is a city full of amazing coffee shops, and I feel like I’m finding a new one every day! Here are some of my favorite, local destinations for the caffeine-addicted entrepreneurs and freelancers looking for that perfect office for a few hours each day. Enjoy!"
La Colombe - Fishtown | 1335 Frankford Avenue
"The La Colombe headquarters in the heart of Fishtown is one of my favorite places to work or have meetings with new clients. The food is delicious (get the pizza for a cheap lunch under $5!), the draft lattes are flowing and there’s serious eye candy if you’re single. If you stay long enough, I would suggest hitting up their happy hour too! One thing to note is that they don’t have wifi; cop a Xfinity hotspot login from a friend and sit near the windows to get work done."
Rally - Bella Vista | 701 S. 7th Street
"New to the scene, Rally is a gorgeous coffee shop, co-working space and agency all in one. Very Instagram-friendly with their adorable and clean decor, Rally is a great place to get sh*t done alongside other creatives. If the weather is right, I suggest sitting outside at one of their tables. Coffee refills are also $1, which is a major plus for all you caffeine addicts!"
Elixr Coffee - Rittenhouse | Address: 207 S. Sydenham Street
"One of my favorite places to work if I ever have a meeting in Center City is Elixr Coffee, located in a little nook near 15th and Walnut. The wifi is super fast and the communal sofa near the front of the space is a fun place to sit and catch up with friends. The energy here is great if you’re looking to be amongst some serious hustlers!"
OCF Coffeehouse - Fairmount | Address: 2100 Fairmount Avenue
"If you’re looking for a workplace with parking, OCF is a great option for a commuter. I love having meetings here because of the expansive space (it’s a historic warehouse) and the full menu perfect for breakfast or lunch meetings. There’s a great community feel at OCF as well, including a chalkboard wall with a calendar for local events in the area."
One Shot Coffee - Northern Liberties | Address: 217 W. George Street
"Be prepared to fall in love with One Shot Coffee in NoLibs. Another gorgeous coffee shop with a great vibe for creatives, One Shot is a popular choice for out-of-towners. The coffee and food can get a little pricey (and they have a $10 minimum for cards), so don’t be surprised when you end up spending $20 or more during your work day. Definitely check the upstairs area for more seating and an awesome library with couches."
