At Lyft, our mission is to improve people’s lives with the world’s best transportation. We see the future as one where car ownership is optional, cities are designed for people instead of cars, traffic disappears, and every seat in every car is filled.
Today we’re excited to announce our partnership with nuTonomy to bring their autonomous vehicles to the Lyft network. With this partnership, nuTonomy will power the first autonomous vehicles on Lyft’s network with its software system and algorithm for urban driving.
Co-founders Karl Iagnemma and Emilio Frazzoli founded nuTonomy because they believe autonomous vehicle technology can change the fundamentals of mobility. The nuTonomy team is one of the first movers in autonomous vehicle development and the company has been testing its autonomous vehicles with public riders in Singapore since the summer of 2016.
“By combining forces with Lyft in the U.S., we’ll be positioned to build the best passenger experience for self-driving cars,” said Karl lagnemma, CEO and Co-founder of nuTonomy. “Both companies care immensely about solving urban transportation issues and the future of our cities, and we look forward to working with Lyft as we continue to improve our autonomous vehicle software system.”
The first stage of the partnership will be focused on research and development (R&D) around the understanding and optimization of the passenger experience. Future stages of our collaboration could lead to thousands of nuTonomy cars on the Lyft platform, as we work together to build a shared vision for cities.
Our pilot will kick off in Boston, Mass., nuTonomy’s home base, in the coming months. We look forward to partnering to introduce the world to a new age of transportation.
