How to Ride Safely

The safety of the Lyft community is our top priority. Since day one, we have worked hard to design policies and features that protect both our drivers and our riders.

Here are some tips on how to stay safe when taking a Lyft ride:

  • When you first open your app, place your pickup pin in an area where your driver can safely pull over and you can easily get into their vehicle. This is important in crowded areas and intersections, so you may want to take a moment to choose the best and safest pickup spot.

  • Always check your app for information on your driver and their vehicle. We provide photos of both, as well as their license plate number and what the car looks like —  including the vehicle’s make, model, and color.

  • Make sure to verify your driver’s name with the name of the driver in your app. Or, you can ask them to verify your name or destination first.

  • Many drivers have a Lyft Amp, a colorful device that sits on their dashboard and acts as a beacon. If your driver has an Amp, look for the color in your app and make sure it matches your driver’s Amp.

  • Feel free to contact your driver through the app or by text or phone if you’re having trouble finding your ride.

  • You can also share your route with friends and loved ones for real-time ride tracking by tapping Share Location in the app.

Lyft provides digital receipts, a two-way rating system, and professionally-administered criminal background checks to help protect both our riders and drivers. Learn more about rider safety.
